What Maui actually is
Hawaiʻi's second-most-visited island trades Oʻahu's city energy for resort towns, dramatic drives, and arguably the best mix of "beach resort" and "genuine adventure" in the state — you can watch a sunrise from a 10,000-foot volcanic summit and be back at a beach club by lunch. The Road to Hana
A roughly 64-mile, famously winding coastal drive along Maui's northeast shore, with 600+ curves and dozens of one-lane bridges, past waterfalls, black-sand beaches and dense rainforest. It is genuinely worth the hype, but it's a full-day commitment, not a scenic detour — start early, expect to be in the car far more than you think, and consider staying overnight in or near Hana rather than driving the whole loop back the same day. Haleakalā
A dormant volcano whose 10,023-foot summit is one of the most popular sunrise viewpoints in the state — popular enough that the National Park Service requires a separate reservation just to drive up between 3am and 7am. It's genuinely cold at the summit before dawn; pack layers no matter how hot it is at your hotel, per our packing list. Resort areas
Wailea and Kaʻanapali anchor Maui's two main resort corridors — Wailea on the sunny South Shore, Kaʻanapali on the West Side near Lahaina. Lahaina itself, a historic former whaling town and once the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, suffered a devastating wildfire in August 2023; recovery and rebuilding has been ongoing, and visitors should check current, official guidance before including it in an itinerary. Whale watching
The ʻAuʻau Channel between Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi and Kahoʻolawe is one of the most reliable humpback whale nurseries in the North Pacific, roughly December through April, peaking in February and March. Shore-based whale watching is genuinely possible from many South and West Maui beaches, no boat required — see our full whale watching guide for where and when to look.
Food, drink and a day trip to Lānaʻi
Paʻia's food truck cluster (see our food trucks guide) is worth a stop before the Road to Hana, and Maui Brewing Company's taprooms are covered in our local beer guide. If you have a spare day, the Lahaina–Lānaʻi ferry makes Lānaʻi a genuinely easy add-on without flying.
