A smaller island, but still a real choice to make
Kauaʻi is compact enough that no base is more than about 90 minutes from any other, but the island's character still shifts noticeably by coast — sunny and resort-oriented on the south, lush and laid-back on the north, workaday and local on the east. Poʻipū (South Shore)
Kauaʻi's main resort concentration, with the island's most reliably sunny, dry weather and a handful of excellent, naturally sheltered beaches — covered further in our iconic beaches guide. This is the closest Kauaʻi gets to a conventional beach-resort base; our Grand Hyatt Kauaʻi review covers the area's largest property.
Good fit for: first-timers, dependable weather, resort amenities without Oʻahu- or Maui-scale crowds.
Princeville & Hanalei (North Shore)
Dramatically lush and mountainous, with Hanalei Bay regularly ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the state, and the closest accommodation base to the Nā Pali Coast trailheads — see our kayaking guide and helicopter tours guide for how to actually see the coast. It's also the wettest, cloudiest part of the island — pack accordingly, per our packing list, and expect a slower, more low-key pace than Poʻipū.
Good fit for: Nā Pali access, dramatic scenery over guaranteed sun, a quieter, greener trip.
Kapaʻa & Līhuʻe (East Side)
The island's commercial and transportation hub — Līhuʻe holds the main airport, and Kapaʻa offers a more affordable, condo-and-chain-hotel-heavy base with easy access to both coasts. Less dramatic scenery directly on-site, but a practical, central location.
Good fit for: budget-conscious trips, a central base for exploring the whole island, easy airport access.
Waimea & the West Side
The gateway to Waimea Canyon and Kokeʻe State Park, and the launch point for boat tours along the Nā Pali Coast (since there's no road access from the north). Accommodation is limited and simple; most visitors day-trip here rather than basing here.
