Our commitment
We want Totally Hawaii to be usable by as many people as possible, including visitors using screen readers, keyboard-only navigation, or browser zoom and text-size adjustments. This is an ongoing effort, not a finished checklist — if you hit a barrier, we genuinely want to know.
What we've built in
- Semantic HTML structure — proper heading hierarchy, landmark regions, and descriptive link text throughout, rather than generic "click here" links.
- Keyboard navigation — the site's search (⌘K / Ctrl+K), mobile menu, and all navigation are operable without a mouse.
- Alt text on meaningful images — hero and inline images carry descriptive alt attributes tied to the page content.
- Color contrast — our palette was chosen with readability in mind; body text meets standard contrast ratios against its background.
- Respects reduced-motion preferences — if your operating system is set to reduce motion, animations and transitions on this site are minimized automatically.
- Responsive text — content reflows properly when you increase browser zoom or text size, rather than clipping or overlapping.
Where we know we can do better
Some of our interactive elements (the search overlay, the mobile drawer) have been tested for basic keyboard and screen-reader operability but not exhaustively across every assistive technology combination. As the site grows past 100 pages, we're prioritizing fixes as we find them rather than claiming full compliance we haven't verified.
Tell us if something doesn't work
If you use assistive technology and hit a genuine barrier anywhere on this site — a page that doesn't read correctly, a control you can't operate, contrast that's hard to read — let us know specifically what happened and on which page. Concrete reports are far more useful to us than a general "make it more accessible" note, and we act on them.
Standards we're working toward
We're informally targeting WCAG 2.1 Level AA as a practical standard, without currently claiming formal certification. This statement will be updated honestly as our actual compliance improves, not written to sound more complete than it is.
